Activating a key Protein may Encourage Glioblastoma Cells to Undergo Apoptosis

Glioblastoma (GBM, Glioblastoma) is a highly aggressive brain tumor. Almost all patients die from the recurrence of the disease. When different apoptotic agents are used for treatment, GBM-derived cells will die, but nuclear division will not occur, and nuclear division determines the path of no return in the process of cell apoptosis. Apoptosis is a complex mechanism by which defective cells promote their own death to protect the body. It is also a complex process with many stages, that is, different parts of the cell will gradually degenerate. In glioblastoma, even if apoptosis begins to occur, the process will stop at one of the stages and allow the cells to survive.
In previous studies, researchers have demonstrated that glioblastoma cells contain insufficient levels of the DFF40/CAD protein, DFF40/CAD is a special protein that can coordinate and regulate the decomposition of cell nucleus during apoptosis. This shortage means that the process of fragmentation and decomposition has not been completed, and the cell can recover from it. Recently, a research report entitled "Gossypol Treatment Restores Insufficient Apoptotic Function of DFF40/CAD in Human Glioblastoma Cells" was published in the international journal Cancers. Scientists from the University of Barcelona and other institutions have injected a special substance called gossypol in cotton into tumor cells through research. Gossypol can enhance the activity of DFF40/CAD protein. Therefore, in the cells being treated, the nuclear division process of cancer cells can be completed, leading to cell death.
Researcher Laura Martinez-Escardo said that now we have found that compared with other drugs, gossypol can promote the DFF40/CAD protein to stay in the nucleus for a long time and promote its breakdown; Based on current research, we have found that compounds such as gossypol may be able to push these cells to a dead end in the process of turning them on, without the need for genetic modification.
The researchers said that promoting the normal end of tumor cell apoptosis may be a good strategy for the treatment of glioblastoma. The results of this article are very promising, which may encourage researchers to further study; The latest research results can also help researchers better understand the biological characteristics of malignant tumors, and can also provide researchers with new tools to help develop more effective strategies.
